It is that time of year again. Many people ask me should they get be immunised against influenza. This year it is expected that there will be a late flu season with a spike in cases after June and as late as October. New studies show that the Influenza vaccinations provide its greatest protection in the first 6 months and therefore it is recommended that this years immunisations be given in late April. We will be running clinics later this month and I will advise of dates in the near future. Private vaccinations can now be booked by calling our friendly staff on 02 4989 5100.

Government vaccines are provided free to a broader range of people this year. The following groups can be at higher risk of complications from influenza and qualify for the vaccine at no cost to the individual:

- all children aged 6 months to less than 5 years of age

-all individuals aged 5 years and over with chronic medical conditions

- all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over

- pregnant women (influenza vaccine can be given at any stage of pregnancy)

- people aged 65 years and over (vaccine that is specifically designed to produce a higher immune response is available for this group)
